Constituent coordination in LFG

چکیده
Ahs t r ac t : This paper outl ines a theory of const i tuent coordination For l ,exicaI-Funetional Grammar. On this theory LFG's flat, unstructured nets are used as the functional representat ion of coordinate constructions, l"unction application is extended to sets by t rea t ing a set tbrmally am the general izat ion of its Functional clmnents. This causes properties a t t r ibuted external ly to a coordinate s t ructure to be uniformly dis t r ibuted across i ts elements, without requi r ing additional g rammat ica l specifications.

Finite-State Rule Deduction for Parsing Non-Constituent Coordination
In this paper, we present a finite-state approach to constituency and therewith an analysis of coordination phenomena involving so-called non-constituents. We show that non-constituents can be seen as parts of fully-fledged constituents and therefore be coordinated in the same way. We have implemented an algorithm based on finite state automata that generates an LFG grammar assigning valid anal...
متن کاملA Comprehensive Analysis of Constituent Coordination for Grammar Engineering
This paper provides an explicit, formal analysis of two not only interesting but also frequent coordination phenomena: the coordination of unlike categories and the coordination of distinct grammatical functions possibly belonging to entirely different levels of structure. The proposed account of the former makes it possible to take full advantage of new generation valence dictionaries which en...
متن کاملThe Treatment of Movement-Rules in a LFG-Parser
By the means of these productions traces are introduced at the "or ig inat ing" position of a "displaced" constituent or speaking more in LFG terms a phonetical ly empty consti tuent is introduced at a c-structure position (the control lee constituent) whose role in the fstructure is to be played by the lexically specified l inearly and structurally displaced consti tuent (the control ler const...
متن کاملNominal juxtaposition in Australian languages: An LFG analysis
It is well known that Australian languages make heavy use of nominal juxtaposition in a wide variety of functions, but there is little discussion in the theoretical literature of how such juxtapositions should be analysed. We discuss a range of data from Australian languages illustrating how multiple nominals share a single grammatical function within the clause. We argue that such construction...
متن کاملLexical Functional Grammar
Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) is a linguistic theory which studies the various aspects of linguistic structure and the relations between them. Traditional LFG analyses focus on two syntactic structures. Constituent structure (cstructure) represents word order and phrasal groupings, and functional structure (f-structure) represents grammatical functions like subject and object. These structur...
